Reynold Saynesbury, burgess or tenant of Dunster, Somerset fl. 1430

MARGARET WIDOW OF JOHN LUTTERELL, KNIGHT

SOMERSET AND DORSET. Assignment of dower [indented]. Dunster 4 September 1430. [Pauncefote].

Assigned for 1/3 castle of Dunster:

2 gates at the castle’s entrance, with all buildings above them and an old, adjoining cook-house; a tower to the west of the gates; a garden between this tower and another tower called ‘hayneystoure’, with free entrance and exit as required to the remaining 2 parts of the castle; and 3 a. pasture and 1 a. wood around ‘le Castell Torre’, with free entrance and exit as required on ‘le casteltorre’ to the wood. The pasture lies next to the western side of the entrance of the castle, and the wood lies on the eastern side of the castle, at the northern end of a wood there.
The following knights’ fees were assigned, with rents and services of the tenants.
Thurloxton, 1 knight’s fee that Thomas, prior of Taunton , holds.
West Quantoxhead, 1 knight’s fee that John Corun and Joan his wife, Eleanor Lambroke William Court , and John Panele hold.
Heathfield, 1 knight’s fee that Ralph Durburugh holds.
Clatworthy, 1 knight’s fee that John Arundell and Eleanor Lambroke hold.
Staunton , 1 knight’s fee that Peter Frye holds.
West Bagborough and Aville, 1½ knights’ fees that Joan who was wife of Thomas Brook, knight , holds.
Luxborough Everard, 1 knight’s fee that William Everard holds.
Bratton, 1 knight’s fee that Thomas Bratton holds.
Quarum-Kitnor (Quarum Sibille) and Manworthy, 1 knight’s fee that John Sidenham holds.
Poleshill, 1 knight’s fee that Joan Carrew holds.
Wyke Champflower, 1 knight’s fee that Joan who was wife of James Fitzjames holds.
Lydiard Punchardon, ½ knight’s fee that Eleanor Hulle holds.
Rents and services were assigned from the following burgesses and free tenants for their burgages in Dunster at ‘le Merssh’ and beyond ‘lez barrers’ of the borough: Robert Ryvers for all his burgages; Joan Haretrowe for one burgage; Thomas Burlond for all his burgages; William Dodysham for 1 burgage; the prior of Dunster for all his burgages; John Orchard, junior , for all his burgages; William Sidenham for all his burgages; John Blondhekfr at Woodford for 1 burgage; John Dodyngton for all his burgages; Reynold Seynysbury for all his burgages; John Cokyslygh for all his burgages; Patrick Everard for 2 tofts that he held; and John Huntle for a cottage with curtilage that he lately held.
Rents and services were assigned from the following burgesses and tenants for their burgages in vico foralo between ‘lez barrers’ and the high cross at the southern end: John Leget William Dodysham, senior John Dodyngton Robert Ryvers Reynold Seynysbury John Cokyslygh, clerk John Orchard, junior Simon Ralagh David, abbot of Cleeve Thomas Hody William Baylly John Staunford John Luty Thomas William John Henton, prior of Dunster Thomas Stowey ; Benet Tolouse and Joan his wife; Walter Phelypp John Bry...ecote [ms illegible]; John Hamelyn Alexander Brytte Thomas Burlond ; and Thomas Hamelyn .
Additionally, rents and services were assigned from Joan Hunte for a messuage, and from Nicholas Brook Simon Michell , and William Dodysham, junior , for all the burgages and tenements that they hold in the way called ‘le Balehey’ between the high cross and gate of the castle.
Assigned: 1/3 perquisites of the borough’s court, as delivered by the bailiff; 4s. 9¼d. from a custom called ‘Burghryghth’, payable yearly at Hock-day, as delivered by William Everard Thomas Alvercote Thomasia Oterey, and William Alvercote , and their heirs; 1/3 issues of all markets, fairs, customs, and other commodities relating to the markets and fairs, as delivered by the bailiff; 8 stalls, 6 of which lie opposite John Luty ’s tenement, and 2 of which lie opposite Thomas Cooke ’s tenement; ½lb wax, as delivered by the tenants or occupants of one burgage of John Holbroke in ‘le Newstrete’.
Rents and services were assigned from the following for lands and tenements etc. in CarhamptonJohn Dodyngton and his heirs for lands and tenements called ‘le Bromehey’; Hugh Bort John Duke Henry Pyppyngg John Luty and Ciota AbellWilliam Everard Ralph Eyre John Bryttecote , and their heirs for lands and tenements that they hold severally; Richard Churchehey and his heirs for a close beside ‘Shyresplotte’; Richard Pykenot and his heirs for an acre of land, formerly of John Baylly of DunsterRobert Ryvers for an acre of land, formerly of Robert Northam ; a third of three parts of 1lb pepper, delivered by the prior of Dunster and his successors for lands and tenements; a third of ¼lb pepper, delivered by John Dodyngton and his heirs for lands and tenements in a place called ‘Algore’; 3 hens and 3 pullets, delivered by William Dodysham and his heirs for a close and dovecot; and 1/3 boon-work that the above prior performs for the lords of Dunster, taking hay or grain to the lord’s grange at harvest with a wagon and eight oxen for a whole day with the lord’s food, worth 12d. For lands and tenements in Old Knowle and Langham-Tort, 3 1/3lb wax and 1/3lb cumin are taken yearly and delivered by Simon Ralagh and his heirs.
Assigned: a messuage and all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Blanche holds beside Marshwood, for which he renders 40s. yearly; a messuage with all lands, meadows, and pastures that Margery atte Venne holds in Rodhuish, for which she renders 5s. 8¾d. yearly; 2 tenements with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Culverwyll holds there, for which he renders 7s. yearly. Assigned, regarding lands and tenements etc. in Carhampton: a messuage and all lands, meadows, and pastures that Henry Dun holds, for which he renders 15s. yearly; a tenement with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Ovyet holds, for which he renders 3s. 9¾d. yearly; a tenement with all lands, meadows, and pastures that William Mylet holds, for which he renders 7s. 7d. yearly; a tenement with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Ovyet holds, for which he renders 7s. 6d. yearly; a messuage with lands, meadows, and pastures that Thomas Patheholl holds, for which he renders 7s. 6d. yearly; a messuage with lands, meadows, and pastures that John Smyth holds, for which he renders 7s. 6d. yearly; a messuage with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Eylmot holds, for which he renders 7s. 6d. yearly; a messuage with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Boucher holds, for which he renders 15s. yearly; a close and 6 a. land that William Mylet holds, for which he renders yearly 3s. 9¾d.; a close called ‘Oldecourt’, accustomed to render 10s. yearly; a tenement and fulling-mill that Thomas Crosse holds, for which he renders 13s. 4d. yearly; a close called ‘Prestelond’ that Richard Pykenot holds, for which he renders 22s. yearly; a tenement with all lands, meadows, and pastures that John Pyket holds, for which he renders 20s. yearly; a messuage with all lands, meadows, and pastures that Robert Brounyng holds, for which he renders 7s. 6d. yearly; and a messuage and 24 a. land that William Haule holds at ‘le merssh’ in the tithing of Carhampton, for which he renders 40s. yearly.
Assigned: 28½ a. and a third of ½ a. land in a field called ‘Chapelwaterlete’ on its northern side, with a reasonable watercourse for watering the land as often as required; 23 a. land in a field called ‘mersshwaterlete’ on its western side, with a reasonable watercourse for watering the land as often as required; 22¾ a. land in a field called ‘Cheselwaterlete’ on the southern side of the king’s way beside ‘mersshwaterlete’; 2 a. land in a field called ‘Whyttston’; 14 a. land and 1/3 rood of land in a field called ‘Magna Avelham’ on its eastern and northern sides; 12 a. meadow and 2 a. thatching reeds in a meadow called ‘Carmore’; the park called ‘Hangerparke’... [ms illegible] as enclosed by the metes, pales, and bounds; 34 a. wood in the wood called ‘Langrug’ on its western side; 10 a. wood in the wood called ‘langcombe’ on its southern and eastern sides; 10 a. wood and underwood in the wood called ‘Kyngesegge’ on its western side; 7 a. wood in the wood called ‘horwode’ and ‘le hatte’ on its eastern side; and 4 a. wood in the wood called ‘Hensty’ on its eastern side.
Assigned: 1/3 profits of 3 mills in Dunster, commonly called ‘Overmylle’, ‘Nethermylle’, and ‘Newmylle’; and 1/3 profits of the hundred of Carhampton with the court of the same, and of the court of the manor of Carhampton called ‘Berton Court’.
Margaret accepted the above in dower and the escheator delivered seisin. In witness, the escheator placed his seal on one part of the indenture for Margaret, and Margaret placed her seal on the other part for the escheator.
